Exactly one month before South Africa's World Cup, no Brazilian player was shining more than Ronaldo. The flame of the greatest World Cup striker ever, however, went off in the beginning of 2010. The German forward Klose was very close of the 15-goals record of the Phenomenon: another was enough.

In August, 7th, 1945, newspapers around the World reported the use of a “nuclear artifact” on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. At that time, was commom to read the news with expressions like “extraordinary advance of technics” and “admirable proof ot the human savoir-faire”. But it was unusual, in that august day, to see newspapers talking about the human casualties. Later, this perspective was reversed, and today the “technics advance” the bomb represented (almost) matters to nobody. The loss of thousands of lives, rather, placed in the center of the history, that may be rewritten. The newspapers, however, can’t.

In a moment that is predicated the end of the printed press - and even the book in paper - what is the point of writing a blog on the front pages of newspapers, during a World Cup?

Over time, perhaps, none - except to researchers who, at dawn, alight their eyes on what, long before, was important for people who, perhaps, aren't in this life anymore. Because of this the newspaper continues to be, perhaps, one of the most enduring sources to try to understands (or to confuse more and more) a time, to understand the dimensions of facts that, later, will jump from diaries to the pages of the History books.

The Paper World Cup is not a blog about the World Cup, nor on the press. Rather, it's about the intersection of these two elements, on the approaches that even with globalization, are still so different from one place to another. And it's, sure, about football too.

If the newspaper and the paper book will go away, nobody knows. Or almost nobody - the future belongs to the Octopus Paul.
